At least 15 dead bodies have been recovered from the flooded River Ngadabul in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Many residents of communities around the river reportedly drowned after it got flooded following a heavy downpour within the week.

But on Wednesday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri, the North East Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Usman, confirmed the recovery of the 15 corpses as the rescue mission continues.

According to a report by The Punch, Usman noted that the cases of drowned people in the flooded river in which many communities along its banks were affected in Maiduguri, the state capital, had been on the increase.

The NEMA coordinator, therefore, appealed to parents and guardians to caution their wards and children against swimming in the river to prevent further loss of lives.

“NEMA as a disaster agency has been engaged in serious sensitisation of the public on dangers of flooding and precautionary measures.

“We have been having meetings with various stakeholders on sensitisation and providing relief materials to affected communities,” Usman was quoted as saying.

However, it was gathered that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno Command, had deployed its personnel along the river banks to drive away children going to the river to swim.

In a similar development, speaking on the issue of flooding in Kano State, the state commissioner for information, Muhammad Garba, on Wednesday, told journalists that approval had been given for the immediate marking and demolishing of all existing structures built on Kwarin Gogau stream in the metropolis.

The Commissioner said that structures marked for demolition include the drainage lines around the Kantin Kwari Market with a view to removing all obstacles hindering the smooth flow of storm and wastewater in the area.
