On Monday, October 17, after what appeared to be a murder-suicide, a distressed 10-year-old child fled to his next-door neighbors for assistance. It was then that police discovered Byanca Cruz, age 26, dead at the property in Volusia County, Florida.
Oscar Salazar, the boy’s stepfather, was later discovered with injuries to his neck and later passed away in a hospital.
At the time, there were three kids living there, with the two youngest being thought to be his.
Investigators think Byanca was stabbed numerous times by him following an altercation about how she had dealt with their 5-year-old.
Sheriff of Volusia County Mike Chitwood described the incident as “truly, really a tragic story” at a press conference.
On the one hand, it is horrible because there are three young children—a 10-year-old, a 5-year-old, and a 2-year-old—involved in this case who are now without their mother.
He revealed his office will be making arrangements with family members to ensure they “have everything they need,” adding that the youngsters will now need “a lot of love and support” from the community as they come to grips with their loss.
