“After his most recent miss, Rio Ferdinand evaluates Liverpool’s £85 million striker for the UCL:

Rio Ferdinand, a former player for Manchester United, is adamant that Darwin Nunez will be a “effective striker” for Liverpool.

This is in spite of another inconsistent showing from the Uruguayan acquired for £85 million last summer.

Nunez made his way back into the Reds lineup after recovering from an injury, and he missed a wonderful chance to increase Liverpool’s advantage by hitting the post with an open goal in front of him.

However, he was successful in scoring just after the break.

There were good and horrible times for him, Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He had a mostly uneventful night. There are times with him when you just scratch your head, but then he makes the play for which you acquired him.

His head never drops, he’s persistent, and he wants to work hard and fight. “The problem with him is that he always tries to get into the box and score goals. You absolutely want that on your side; it’s a bonus.

He won’t ever be the cleanest of strikers, but in the long run, he will be a productive striker who contributes to the goals scored by this football team.

He would be challenging to play against as a defender and would make many defenders’ days difficult.
