Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party, slammed Atiku for his remark, claiming it might jeopardize the nation’s unity.

On Sunday, Baba-Ahmed declared via his verified Twitter account that Atiku is an ethnic bigot who is incapable of even uniting his own party.

On Saturday, Atiku urged Northerners to support him in the 2023 elections.

The ordinary Northerner, according to him, requires someone who is from the North, understands that region of the nation, and has the ability to forge connections across different parts of the nation.

“The Northerner needs something like this. A Yoruba or Igbo candidate is not required. I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern descent,” the vice-president who was born in Adamawa remarked in a widely shared video.

Atiku’s remarks have since elicited conflicting responses from Nigerians and contenders for president, including the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC.

Atiku’s remarks, according to the APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, are an assault on the nation’s long-preserved national unity.

Morka claims that the PDP presidential candidate’s statement demonstrates his eagerness to be elected president.

What does Atiku believe the typical Southerner needs, he asked? Why does it matter what the typical Northerner or even the typical Southerner could need? Why is it not focused on the needs of Nigeria and Nigerians? Nigeria needs strong, visionary leadership that is committed to transcendental national unity rather than preoccupations with ethnic or sectional identities.

“Atiku’s statements resound with excessive and senseless desperation, and such a guy cannot and must not be trusted with the most important position of President – a post whose primary obligation is that of leading, unifying, and working in the best interests of all in an ethnoreligious, heterogeneous nation as Nigeria. This kind of incredibly explosive speech is not what our nation needs right now or ever.

The APC spokesperson expressed surprise that Atiku, who declared to be on a mission to unite the nation, could take actions that threatened it.
