The incident occurred on Sunday, October 30, 2022, about 5.30 pm in the Yelwan Lebra neighborhood, a suburb of the city of Bauchi.
On the same Sunday evening, Damina, a 68-year-old retired public servant, allegedly saw Babanta with his daughter.
Punch claims that during the second term of former governor Isa Yuguda, Damina worked first as commissioner of information and then as commissioner of special responsibilities.
In the Dass Emirate Council of Bauchi State, he also bears the historic title of “Galadiman Dass.”
Residents claimed that the accused made a phone call to his friend’s daughter to set up a meeting place.
An unnamed cousin of the deceased said that the former commissioner had been making overtures toward his friend’s adolescent daughter.
“My late brother and Galadiman Dass were neighbors and friends. The 18-year-old girl was the daughter of Galadima’s deceased friend, and it was claimed that Galadima tried to have a sexual relationship with her. By mailing her recharge cards, he had been pursuing her, the insider claimed.
The girl told her mother, who then told the father, but the father didn’t think the story was true. Then, on Sunday, he called the girl and told her to meet him at the Total gas station by 5 o’clock so that they could go out.
“The girl told her father, who told her to proceed as planned and promised to follow her to find out what was happening. Galadima was waiting at the point while the father watched the daughter come, as was to be expected.
“Galadima ordered her to get in the car after he had already opened the door, but the father then challenged his friend while yelling and stormed away. He then made an attempt to flee, but they fought and he ended up pushing the late Adamu out of the vehicle. The back wheel of the automobile crushed and fractured his legs after he smacked his head on the pavement of the road. On the way to the hospital, he passed away.
In her account of the incident to journalists, senior secondary school student Khadija claimed that the ex-commissioner had obtained her phone number from a friend and had repeatedly asked her out but she had turned him down.
“Galadima called me yesterday (Sunday) evening when I was in the store and asked me to meet him near the Yelwan Tundu market. I told his buddy and father about it, and he urged me to go, she said.
When we arrived, my father ordered me to get into his car while I was riding in a Keke while he rode a bike. When I told him to wait, my father appeared to face the man. He wanted to run away with me as they were dragging his car, so I got out. He attempted to turn off the automobile while driving roughly while holding my dad’s hands inside. From there, he struck him with a rod, killing him.
Galadima allegedly took off while his father’s lifeless body lay on the road, according to Khadija.
On Monday, October 31, as commuters were impeded on their way to work due to the event, there was protest in the Yelwa area.
To get the situation under control, men from the Nigerian Police Force, Army, Civil Defense, and the local king were needed.
According to SP Ahmed Wakil, a spokesperson for the state police command, who verified the incident to the media, Umar Sanda, the commissioner of police, had ordered that the issue be sent to the command headquarters for a covert inquiry.
“Yesterday, October 30, 2022, at around 7.30 p.m., a case of culpable homicide involving a deadly motor vehicle collision was transferred from the Yelwa Division for a covert investigation.
“One Mohammed Damina, Galadiman Dass, a 68-year-old native of Yelwa, lured one Khadijah Adamu Babanta. She was seduced by Galadima, and when she told her father about it, she also told him that the aforementioned man was waiting for her at a gas station.
“Her father went with her to the location. When the now-deceased father arrived, he confronted Galadima through the car’s passenger side. As they were talking, Galadima sped off while the deceased was still clinging to the door, causing him to fall. He was taken to ATBUTH for treatment, but a doctor later pronounced him dead “PPRO reported.
“The Area Commander, Metro, and other tactical commanders were sent to the area as soon as the police commissioner, Umar Sanda, received the complaint, the source continued.
He stated that the suspect is being held by the police while they conduct an investigation.
