After months of comparatively peace in the capital city, a series of explosions allegedly rattled the central Shevchenkivskyi area of Kyiv on Monday morning. It appeared to be retaliation for the attack on a crucial Crimean bridge over the weekend.

The blasts have prompted some officials, according to the Washington Post, to issue air-defence alerts and advise inhabitants to seek cover.

The mayor of Kiev, Vitalii Klitchko, reported explosions in the Shevchenko district, a sizable area in the city’s center that houses the Old Town and a number of governmental structures.

A photo that was shared on Twitter by Ukrainian parliamentarian Lesia Vasylenko showed at least one explosion close to the Kiev National University’s main building in the city center of Kiev.

There were fatalities and injuries, the Kiev Emergency Service’s spokeswoman told the AP. Several areas are now being worked on by rescuers, according to Svitlana Vodolaga.

It is unknown how many people have been killed.

The explosions, which sounded like rocket assaults, were heard by AP journalists. Additionally on Monday morning, journalists for the Associated Press heard explosions in Dnipro’s town center.

Recently, combat has mostly affected areas around Crimea, including as Zaporizhzhya, from which six missiles were launched on Saturday night from Russian-occupied territory there.

Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the assault that destroyed the significant bridge linking Russia and the annexation of Crimea as “an act of terrorism” that was prepared by Ukrainian special forces on Sunday.
