Two police officers, a deputy superintendent of police and an inspector performing a stop-and-search, were reportedly slain in Imo State by a group of armed men wearing military uniforms.

The deceased officers were reportedly assassinated in front of the station where they conducted the stop-and-search operation. They were assigned to the Umuna Divisional Police Headquarters in the state’s Onuimo council region.

SaharaReporters learned that the thugs operated a black Hilux car.

On Monday, sources told SaharaReporters that the attack had caused chaos in the neighborhood since other drivers had left their cars and fled for cover.

According to one of the sources, “The police officers had blocked the road on a stop-and-search this morning, but they were unaware that the black Hilux van with about five men dressed in military uniform were not actually soldiers, but bandits, as they opened fire on the unwary police officers and killed the DSP and the Inspector in the process. They then sped off before the other officers, who had taken to their heels, could react.

The source claimed that the incident “created mayhem as drivers hurriedly abandoned their cars and scampered for safety.”

The Imo Command Spokesman, Michael Abbattam, did not answer up calls or reply to texts given to him, making it impossible for SaharaReporters to communicate with him.
