The organisation bemoaned the recent statement attributed to the PDP presidential candidate, inciting a segment of the country against candidates from other regions of Nigeria, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Sulaimon Suberu.

Sectional emotion and ethnic chicanery, according to ADAPHAI, are not just outdated and narrow-minded; they also endanger Nigeria’s tenuous corporate structure and survival.

We were shocked by a recent statement attributed to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, inciting a section of the country against candidates from other parts of Nigeria. As a leading civil society organization with the mission to promote peaceful coexistence and non-violent culture among communities in Africa.

Indeed, Nigeria has a huge duty to set an example for peacebuilding and democratization in Africa by exercising responsible leadership rather than one with a predisposition toward sectarianism. Nigeria is the largest democracy in Africa and the most populous black nation in the world.

Our empirical analysis of the statement’s significance revealed that the PDP presidential candidate is not just an ethnic irredentist but also an unrepentant political obscurantist with a tendency to further polarize Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines.

“Without sugarcoating it, it takes a genuine and sincere leader with national outlook and cohesive orientation with capacity to aggregate and accommodate every interest and aspiration and not a politician that dwells on ethnic and religious differences to revive the current state of insecurity and ethnic polarization in Nigeria,” the statement read.

Therefore, ADAPHAI urged Nigerians to exercise caution and vigilance when choosing candidates for leadership positions in the upcoming 2023 presidential election.
