Liz Truss could be replaced as leader by Sunak, a 42-year-old former finance minister, on Monday, making him Britain’s third prime minister in less than two months.
Sunak, who held the position of Chancellor under Johnson, has become the front-runner in the battle for the Tory leadership after receiving the support of around 150 conservative MPs.
The wealthy former hedge fund manager will be responsible for restoring Britain’s economic standing through significant spending cuts as the country enters a recession, weighed down by rising energy, food, and mortgage prices.
He will also be in charge of a party that has recently seen a string of crises, is bitterly divided along ideological lines, and a nation that is losing patience with the behavior of its officials.
Sunak declared his candidacy on Sunday. “The United Kingdom is a great country, but we confront a profound economic crisis,” he added.
He must first defeat Penny Mordaunt, the final contender, who needs the backing of 100 parliamentarians in order to be included on Monday’s vote.
Over 25 parliamentarians have so far backed Mordaunt, the House of Commons leader in the legislature. Over 150 people have endorsed Sunak.
Grant Shapps, an advocate for Sunak and interior minister, said on BBC television that “he’s not taking anything for granted at all.” He has been talking to his coworkers all morning. Naturally, we’ll be hoping to draw enough people to make sure that this can be resolved.
