Kenya: Scores Injured At Presidential Inauguration Due To Stampede

The inauguration of the Kenya President-elect, William Ruto on Tuesday ended in injuries for some attendees as several people were reportedly injured in a stampede at the gate of the stadium in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi.

Reuters reports that a video broadcast on Kenyan television showed people being tended to by medics after being injured in the crush outside Nairobi’s 60,000-seat Kasarani Sports Centre.

 

According to Joseph Mbithi from the emergency unit, Mama Lucy hospital received several patients injured in the crush.

However, Mbithi said that the crush victims were all in stable condition.

Also, a dispatcher for St John’s Ambulance service, according to Reuters, said that ambulances had taken several wounded people to at least three hospitals but that he did not have more details.

It was reported that the stadium was packed by 5am with Ruto’s supporters to the extent that the National Police Service said in a tweet that the stadium was full and asked that no one else try to come.

 

Ruto, the former Deputy President was elected the next Kenyan president in the general election held on 9 August this year, in which four candidates including the former member of Kenyan Parliament, Raila Odinga contested.

 

Ruto, according to the result released by the Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), scored 7,176,141 representing 50.5% to defeat his closest rival, Odinga, who scored 6,942,930 representing 48.8%.
