The Osun State Government has received a warning from youth in Iree town that attempts to impose a monarch on them without adhering to established traditional rules and regulations will not be successful.

The teenagers stated that such an imposition will fail and that they are aware of preparations by the State administration to name an Aree of Iree.

The disgruntled youngsters also claimed that Adebayo Adeleke, the Osun State commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, appointed Chief (Mrs.) Serifat Adebayo, the Iyalode of Iree, to the council of Kingmakers.

Adeleke had been forewarned by the Iree Kingmakers not to choose a woman to join the Council of Kingmakers.

According to Cezza Blog, the Kingmakers, led by Chief Saliu Atoyebi, the Aogun of Iree, asserted that it was against the customs and traditions of the community for a woman to be elected as a member of the Kingmakers.

The Commissioner, a native of the town, is allegedly supporting a candidate for the Aree stool, according to the Iree Kingmakers.

Adeleke, the Osun Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, defended himself by asserting that the government alone is responsible for appointing a warrant chief.

He insisted that any person of reputation from the afflicted community might be selected, and that such appointments were always made through the local government authority.

He asserted that neither the chiefs nor anyone else had the authority to reject a warrant chief who had been appointed by the government.

He mentioned that the Kingmakers needed to be informed on what the law permitted while also revealing that several warrant chiefs had been chosen in such circumstances.

The Commissioner added that Chief Serifat Adebayo, the Iyalode of Iree, was appointed as a kingmaker to take the place of the Eesa of Iree, who passed away some time ago.

Divergent opinions have been expressed on the development, with some locals accusing the Kingmakers of holding the town hostage over the choice of Aree of Iree.

They also pointed out that some of them had been extorting the government rather than putting the needs of the community ahead of personal and political interests.

They said that choosing a Chief to replace the late Eesa should come from Oke-Eesa under the leadership of Adebayo Afolabi.

They questioned the justification for hastily choosing a new Aree and accused the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Adebayo Adeleke, of impeding the selection process’ start.
