Donald Trump, a former US president, has responded to questions in a lawsuit launched against him by advice writer E. Jean Carroll, who claims he sexually assaulted her three decades ago.

Carroll claims the attack happened in a dressing room at a high-end department shop in New York in the middle of the 1990s. When Trump disputed the claim, calling Carroll a liar, Carroll decided to sue him for defamation.

Carroll’s counsel would not disclose the specifics of the deposition, but did state that it happened on October 19 and that a civil trial is set for February 6, 2023.

A representative for the legal firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink said, “We’re thrilled that we were able to take Donald Trump’s deposition on behalf of our client, E Jean Carroll, today.

We are unable to speak further at this time.

Alina Habba, Trump’s lawyer, issued the following statement: “As we have said throughout, my client was glad to clear the air today.

“Like many past witch hunts against Donald Trump, this case is nothing more than a political ruse,”

CNN said that Trump took part in the deposition from his Florida home Mar-a-Lago.

Ms. Carroll, a longstanding advice columnist for Elle magazine, claimed in a 2019 story for New York magazine that she had a chance encounter with Mr. Trump in late 1995 or early 1996 at the department shop Bergdorf Goodman.

She claims that while she was assisting him in choosing a gift, they ended up in a dressing room where she claims he raped her. Trump was married to Marla Maples at the time, according to the woman, who claims she was 52 and he was approximately 50.

Carroll added that she notified two friends about the incident at the time. The other counseled her to remain silent while the first recommended her to contact the police, saying: “Ignore it! He has 200 attorneys. He will inter you.”

Trump swiftly denied the claim and charged Carroll with lying to promote her book.

When Mr. Trump was still US president, she then sued him for defamation on the grounds that his remarks had damaged her reputation.

More than a dozen women have previously accused Mr. Trump of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.
