Two Su-34 jet pilots on a training flight ejected before the aircraft struck the structure, a local correspondent in Yeysk told Russia’s state-run TV program Rossiya 24.

After completing their search of the rubble, rescuers updated the fatality toll, according to Russia’s emergency ministry. The victims included three kids. Russian media stated that more than 360 people were taken away from the disaster site, including students from a local secondary school.

According to the authorities, 68 people were saved from the fire in the nine-story building.

Following the collision, 19 injured people are receiving medical attention.

The Russian defense ministry reported that a fire in one of the engines during takeoff was to blame for the disaster, according a report from the pilots who had already left the aircraft.

“The plane’s fuel supply caught fire at the location where the Su-34 touched down, in the courtyard of a residential building,” it said.

Across the Sea of Azov from the damaged city of Mariupol, the port city of Yeysk is located close to the eastern Ukrainian conflict zone.

It has served as a significant training facility for Russian naval aviation.
