The North Korean aircraft were reportedly spotted flying around 12 kilometers (7 miles) north of the Northern Limit Line, a de facto inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea, and about 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of the Military Demarcation Line in the center of the Korea border area.

Between 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday (1330 GMT) and 0:20 a.m. local time on Friday (1530 GMT), the incident took place.

According to the report, the planes were also spotted close to the eastern end of the inter-Korean border.

The South Korean air force “conducted an emergency sortie with its superior air force, including the F-35A, and maintained a reaction posture, carrying out a proportional response maneuver in accordance with the flight of a North Korean military aircraft,” according to the statement.

Last month, Kim Jong Un declared his nation to be a nuclear power and ruled out engaging in denuclearization negotiations with the US. In retaliation for North Korea firing a missile over Japan last week, the US and South Korea launched missiles.
