“The traders forced me to ferry them: – Sailor who ferried boat that capsized, in Anambra leaving over 30 people including women, and children dead, speaks:

The captain of the boat that capsized at Umunankwo in Anambra State’s Ogbaru local government area over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of over 30 people, has claimed that the female traders who perished forced him to make the fateful trip because they were desperate to get rid of the crops that had been prematurely harvested as a result of this year’s flood, which submerged their farms before the planted crops had reached maturity.

Amaugo stated that there were 48 people on his boat in a conversation with newsmen.

I didn’t want to make the trip, but the people—mostly women—begged me to take them to Nkwo Ogbakuba market so they could sell vegetables that had been prematurely plucked from flooded farms.

The market ladies surrounded my home and convinced me to take a boat to Ogbakuba. After taking off, the wave got too big, and I was unable to control it in any way. Despite my best efforts to stabilize it, the waves knocked the boat into the pillars of the Umunnakwo/Ossomala bridge.

The boat suddenly capsized. It was awful to witness individuals fighting for their lives.

Mr. Bernard Achonu, a resident of the Mputu community in Isiala Mbano, Imo State, reported losing his wife and three kids, who were between the ages of two and six. He claimed that practically all of the homes in the communities in Ogbaru had been submerged by the flood, so his family had boarded a boat to go to a safer location. He expressed sadness that an attempt to secure his family had gone wrong.

Sebastian Umeorji, another individual, was sobbing excessively and stated he was still looking for his wife’s remains.
